Kolbe & Kolbe Aluminum Clad
Windows
There are two types of aluminum cladding available:
roll-formed and extruded.
-Roll-formed
-Extruded
Roll-formed aluminum cladding is a heavy-gauge,
5052 alloy aluminum cladding that is roll-formed to fit tightly
to the exterior wood surface. This maintains the beautiful profile
of wood windows while taking advantage of the insulating properties
of solid wood. The clad corners are overlapped and sealed for
moisture resistance.
Roll-formed aluminum cladding is used as standard
on Kolbe Heritage Select Series windows. It is an option on
Kolbe Heritage Series windows. For Kolbe Heritage and Heritage
Select Series windows, the aluminum cladding is coated with
a polyester film, then baked continuously to cure and harden.
This helps the finish resist marring and fading, while increasing
weatherability of the product.
Roll-formed aluminum cladding is also used as
standard on the sash of Kolbe Ultra Series windows and doors
and is optional on the sash of Kolbe Magnum Series windows.
For Kolbe Ultra and Kolbe Magnum Series products, the aluminum
cladding is covered with a 70% fluoropolymer finish. This durable
coating will keep the colors vibrant.
Extruded aluminum cladding is used as standard
on the frames of Kolbe Ultra Series windows and doors and optionally
on the frames of Kolbe Magnum Series windows. It is also used
as standard on both the frames and sash of Kolbe Heritage Select
and Kolbe Heritage Series clad radius windows.
The extruded frames employ a 6063 aluminum alloy,
with walls that are a nominal .050" thick and over. These windows
and doors will withstand environmental extremes and the rigors
of construction. Frame corners are mitered 45° or profile-cut,
then internal corner and end keys are screwed (not crimped)
into the joints and internally sealed with silicone. This makes
for exceptionally sturdy construction, with quality from the
inside out. Frame extrusions are press-fit onto the wood frame,
for a superior union.
Kolbe Ultra Series and Kolbe Magnum Series clad
window frames are finished on the exterior with a 70% fluoropolymer
coating which meets the performance requirements of AAMA 2605-98
specifications. This means that abrasion resistance is doubled,
as compared to coatings meeting AAMA 2604-98 specifications
(similar to previous AAMA 605.2-92 specifications). Corrosion
due to humidity and salt spray are resisted up to 33% longer.
Erosion and chalking are resisted twice as long – meeting the
10-year weathering performance requirements of AAMA 2605-98.
The same 70% fluoropolymer coating is used on
the roll-formed aluminum clad sash of Kolbe Ultra Series and
Kolbe Magnum Series clad windows. The 70% fluoropolymer coating
will keep these colors vibrant, with color and gloss retention
lasting twice as long as products meeting lesser AAMA 2604-98
performance specifications. And, design flexibility is not sacrificed,
as custom colors are available with the same 70% fluoropolymer
coating. This proves a commitment to providing the very best.
Additionally, extruded aluminum accessories are
available for Kolbe Ultra & Kolbe Magnum Series windows, including
1-15/16" profiled brickmould, 3-1/2" profiled casing, 3-1/2"
flat casing, mull covers, frame expander covers, two styles
of expander trim receivers, mullion expanders, traditional sill
nosing, projected sill nosing, sill drip edges, and radius nailing
fin drip caps.
